Student Internships

BeWild offers internships for current NC college students. We have blocks for the spring and fall semester as well as two summer blocks. Students commit to a 12-14 week block depending on their availability.

Interns will choose to specialize either with the ambassador or rescue animals. Ambassador animal interns will work with our permanent outreach animals, which includes reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, a tenrec, and an owl. These interns will learn husbandry and nutrition, help design enclosures, and create enrichment and training programs.

The rescue animal track is geared toward pre-veterinary students. Rescue animal interns will help with husbandry and nutrition, but will also learn about biosecurity and become proficient in restraint and basic medical treatments. These treatments may include syringe/tube feeding, oral/ophthalmic medications, injections, and subcutaneous fluids.

Interns must have reliable transportation to our property in South Durham near Southpoint Mall. Interns will commit to 2 shifts per week, 1 weekday evening shift (6-8 PM) and 1 weekend afternoon shift (1-3 or 2-4 PM). While this is currently an unpaid internship, we do intend to offer stipends in the future when the program is more developed.

Interested? We are currently accepting applications for the Spring 2025 block, and applications are due Sunday, December 15th. Please fill out the application at the link below and let us know if you have any questions. We will performing Zoom interviews and should have our interns chosen by the end of December. We and are currently accepting 1 ambassador and 1 rescue intern for this block.

Adopt

If you are interested in adding a scaley friend to your family, please consider adopting from BeWild. We commonly have leopard geckos, bearded dragons, and ball pythons available for adoption – along with lots of other species! We always have a waitlist of animals needing to be surrendered, so adopting a BeWild animal allows us to help another animal. If you’ve adopted an animal from BeWild, please join the BeWild Adopters & Alumni Facebook group.

Become a Volunteer

The BeWild volunteer program is open to new volunteers! We currently have 4 animal care shifts a week during the weekends and weekday evenings.

Animal care shifts are done at our property in South Durham. Other volunteer opportunities include the occasional work day for large projects and handling the animals at public events. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and minors must attend the first shift with a parent. Volunteers assist with animal husbandry, socialization, training, and cleaning. To join our volunteer team, please email us at info@bewildnc.org!
